          Special Education Teacher

 

 

Responsible to:  Principal

                                 Director of Special Education  

 

Qualifications:

  1. Valid TN Teacher’s License with appropriate endorsements
  2. Highly Qualified status, as applicable, in areas of assigned instruction
  3. Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  4. Competent technological skills

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares lesson plans and teaching strategies for course(s) of study taught
  2. Aligns both course(s) curriculum taught and/or assessments with state and local

            curriculum standards

  1. Uses a variety of teaching strategies to facilitate student learning
  2. Plans a program of study that addresses the individual needs and abilities of the

            students

  1. Develops and maintains a school/classroom environment conducive to learning and

            socially appropriate for the age of students taught

  1. Analyzes and uses appropriate data to guide instruction and develop assessments
  2. Establishes and communicates clear expectations for all lessons, class work, and

            projects.  

  1. Assigns lessons routinely and corrects student work in a timely fashion
  2. Maintains good order in classroom and other areas of the school
  3. Supervises students at school related functions including on and off campus activities
  4. Consults with other professionals to address learning or behavioral problems with

            specific students

  1. Communicates with parents/guardian regularly through verbal and written form
  2. Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis, both formative and summative,

            and provides progress reports as required

  1. Schedules parent conferences as directed by the system and as needed in particular

            cases; if necessary, these conferences may be outside the school day as dictated by

            student/parent/guardian needs

  1. Keeps accurate attendance, academic performance, and IEP records for assigned

            students

  1. Reports to the appropriate administrative and/or consultative personnel when

            knowledgeable or suspicious that a child’s health or welfare has been or appears

            to be at risk

  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,

            materials, and facilities

 

  1. Participates in school level faculty meetings, system professional development and

            in-service meetings, staff committee meetings, and other workshops for teacher

                       training

  1. Plans, supervises, and provides guidance for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
  2. Maintains accurate financial records
  3. Provides detailed plans for substitute teachers including lessons, schedules and rules

            regarding classroom organization, procedures and individual student needs

  1. Conducts IEP meetings as set forth by Federal and State Laws within given timelines.
  2. Participates in Child Find activities and Referral Process for Special Education
  3. Participates and assists with compliance monitoring
  4. Report compliance issues promptly to Principal/Special Education Director
  5. Serves as a resource for general education teachers in helping them understand

            students with disabilities and how to meet students’ special needs within the

            typical classroom

  1. Stays alert to best practices in the area of Special Education and stays abreast

            of legal updates

  2. Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest standards of public education and in support of the District’s Vision/Mission Statements
  3. Maintains ethical standards, which include professionalism and the protection of confidential student and staff information
