Job Description
Responsible to: Director of Health Services
Principal
Qualifications:
- Current licensure to practice as a register nurse (RN) in the State of Tennessee.
Graduate of an accredited program offering a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN)
and three to five years of recent nursing experience.
OR
Graduate of either an accredited diploma School of Nursing or an accredited program
offering an associate degree in nursing (ASN), plus three to five years of recent
nursing experience preferably in school nursing, public health nursing, or
community health nursing with children.
- Current CPR Certification in BLS
- A serviceable automobile in order to perform required travel
- Strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Competent technological skills
Essential Responsibilities:
- Collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a
systematic manner
- Uses data collected about the health and developmental status of the student to
determine a nursing diagnosis
- Develops a Nursing Care Plan and/or Individualized Health Plan (IHP) with specific
goals and interventions delineating school nursing actions unique to a student’s
needs
- Intervenes as guided by the Nursing Care Plan to implement nursing actions that
promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and affect rehabilitation
- Assesses student responses to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing
diagnosis, and Nursing Care Plan and to determine progress made toward goal
achievement
- Conducts screenings and assesses health status which includes follow-up in primary,
secondary, and tertiary prevention
- Serves as a resource person to school personnel, students, and families, through
interpretation of health data and assists them to achieve optimal levels of
wellness through health education, school attendance, and academic performance
- Provides emergency and standard first aid
- Promotes and assists in control of communicable diseases
- Monitors schools’ compliance with State Health Regulations, Immunization Records
and Entrance Physicals
- Monitors and helps to maintain confidential health records and in compliance with
HIPPA and the Patient Privacy Act
- Monitors student’s health and communicates with the Director of Health Services
when student health issues may require additional services

- Maintains ethical standards, which include professionalism and the protection of confidential student and staff information
- Other responsibilities and/or duties may be required and assigned
